Geagea ‘key’
to reconciliation
May 22, 2003

National reconciliation
will never be reached
unless jailed Lebanese
Forces leader Samir Geagea
is freed, political analyst
and writer George Nassif
said Wednesday. Speaking
during a conference at
the American University
of Beirut (AUB) on the
relationship between Geagea’s
freedom and the achievement
of national reconciliation,
Nassif reminded the audience
that Geagea had considered
him an enemy, adding that
“this is the reason
I want Geagea free.”
Nassif said that he himself
had been one of the leaders
of the National Movement
in 1975, widely known
for his left-wing affiliations,
and that he had been wanted
dead or alive in LF-controlled
areas. Nassif said that
even if Geagea, the only
warlord tried and jailed,
was part of the “dirty
war,” there were
others who also took part
in that war, and he should
not be held solely responsible.
